You’ve all heard the joke about NASCAR: It’s just a bunch of cars turning left for hours on end.
For Allie, a first-grade teacher, and Blake, a manufacturing machinery salesman, NASCAR held a very special turn of events. It is where their mutual friend, Cayley, introduced them.
“Blake and I were lucky enough to meet at one of the most romantic places on Earth, a NASCAR Race,” Allie jokes.
Being new to Charlotte, she and her friend Cayley decided they were going to be brave and go to an October race. After learning Blake and some of his friends were going to the race as well, they decided to meet up and go together.
“Blake and I immediately hit it off and had a great time tailgating and hanging out. The next week we went on our first date and the rest is history!”
While many brides are surprised by their fiance’s proposals, Allie truly never saw it coming.
“It was April 5th, which happened to be the first nice day in months,” Allie said. “It had been a very stressful semester for me in grad school and this was the first weekend that I didn’t have to spend doing school work. Since we hadn’t done anything adventurous in a while, Blake casually suggested a hike and a picnic at Lake Norman State Park. He knew how stressed I had been, and I thought the idea sounded perfect. Everything seemed spur-of-the-moment and casual, so I didn’t suspect a thing!
“After a great hike and awesome picnic, Blake decided to set up a hammock for us to relax in and enjoy the beautiful day. All of the sudden I felt Blake’s heart going a mile a minute and before I could even connect what was happening he pulled a love letter out of his backpack. Writing me a love letter was something I had been trying to convince Blake to do for years. I was so shocked that he had finally done this that I didn’t even consider that a proposal was about to follow. The end of the letter hinted at the question he was about to ask and before I could even react, he pulled out the ring and proposed!
“I had always joked with Blake about how he could never manage to surprise me when he proposed, but he pulled it off! One of the best parts is that I will always have his love letter to take out and re-read to remind me of this special day.”
The couple wed and held their reception at The Club at Longview, and this reflected much of what makes Allie and Blake so special.
“Our wedding was completely tailored to us and what we wanted,” Allie said. “It was an outdoor wedding which I thought was unique compared to most of the weddings I have been to. We did a love letter ceremony at the wedding, since love letters are special to our relationship.
“We wrote love letters to each other and put them in a box with a bottle of wine and we will open them on our fifth anniversary. Also, we love to dance and our band (The Black and Blue Experience) was absolutely spectacular!”
Their first dance was to “Into the Mystic.”
“It was a song we have been listening to since we first started dating and always joked it would be our first dance song,” Allie said.
For a honeymoon, the couple spent a week in St. Lucia a month after the wedding. “I am a teacher, so we had to wait for school to get out. It was nice waiting so we could relax after the wedding and have something to look forward to.”
Their wedding day will always be something they treasure together, especially the reception.
“I would say the band was the best thing about that,” Allie said. “They made the wedding so fun and everyone was dancing until the very end, which is exactly what we wanted.
“Also, we had a lot of out-of-town guests, so it was so special to have everyone we loved in one place, which we had never experienced!”
