The Club at Longview {Kylie and Michael} St Patrick Cathedral Charlotte Wedding Photographer

When Michael proposed to Kylie, it was the proposal dreams are made of: lapping waves, sparkling stars and an explosion of fireworks.

The couple met at North Carolina State University. They knew each other all four years, but only as acquaintances. It wasn’t until Michael gave Kylie and her girlfriend a ride to a bar during senior year that these college friends became something more.

“Michael was wearing a cologne that I thought smelled really nice,” Kylie said. “It really was what kind of got us talking. We joke that we might not have started dating if he had forgotten to put on his cologne that night!” Kylie said.

After that evening, Kylie and Michael began dating. As the relationship grew more serious, Michael knew Kylie was the woman for him. He began planning an international proposal, but differing international customs put a slight crimp in his proposal plans.

“We were on a family vacation with my parents and siblings (all 10 of us!) this past Christmas,” Kylie said. “We were traveling to different places over Christmas and New Years Eve. We started off in Salzburg, Austria; then went to Budapest, Hungary; then went to Barcelona, Spain; and ended the trip in Lucerne, Switzerland!”

Over New Year’s Eve, the family was in Barcelona. Michael had planned to pop the question right at New Year’s Eve at an oceanfront club.

“Michael had arranged for he and I and my siblings (my brother and his wife, my sister, and my little brother) to go to a nightclub overlooking the beach for our New Year’s celebration!”

Unfortunately, they were unaware that the Spanish tradition is to celebrate the New Year AFTER midnight – so the club where they were scheduled to celebrate the New Year did not allow us in until 12:30. a.m.

“We ended up having a 10:30 dinner in the hotel lobby trying to kill time before we could go!” Kylie said. “So I guess sitting in the hotel lobby was not his idea of a great midnight proposal! We finally got over to the club and had amazing seats saved for us overlooking the beach.

“As soon as we sat down he had asked me if I wanted to go look at the beach. I looked at him like he was crazy! We had just spent 2½ hours waiting to get to this place and he wants to get up and go look at the beach? I was ready to relax and enjoy us finally getting to our destination!

“I can’t,” Kylie said. ‘I have tights on- I will get sand all in my tights!’As I’m declining his offer, my sister chimes in and urges me to go! Meanwhile Michael looks ghostly white because little did I know I am ruining his surprise! After they continue to push me to go out to the beach I finally agree.

“Michael takes my hand and leads me onto the beach. We walk down towards the water where he stops and asks me ‘Do you love me?’ I say ‘Of course I do!’ and as I am finishing my answer he gets down on one knee and asks me ‘Then will you marry me?’ As he is getting up to put the ring on my finger fireworks happen to go off! It was perfect!! We joke and say how we couldn’t believe so many people came out that night to celebrate our engagement!”

Michael chose a sparkler that made the fireworks seem tame in comparison… Her ring was stunning!

“Michael knew I always wanted to be able to celebrate with family afterward and that is exactly what we did! We went back to our table and celebrated the rest of the night with my siblings! It was the perfect way to start the New Year: a proposal on the beaches of Barcelona!”

The night of Kylie’s proposal is something she treasures for another special reason.

“My older brother, Tripp, suddenly passed away a month after this vacation. This was the last family vacation we all spent together and even though he was not able to celebrate with us on our wedding day, he was there that night to celebrate our engagement with us and I will always treasure that,” Kylie said.

The couple married in the Cathedral of St. Patrick and held a reception afterward at The Club at Longview. Many things made the ceremony special. Kylie’s parents arranged for Pope Francis to bless their marriage.

“That meant so much to Michael and me,” Kylie said.

But that wasn’t all.

“My sister, who was my Maid of Honor, gave a speech and started it off by having my Grandma Carole rap with her!” Kylie said. “It was hilarious! My Grandma has skills!”

After their fairytale wedding, Kylie, who is a real estate broker with Simonini Properties, and Michael, who is a builder and developer with Simonini Group and Simonini Properties, spent a lengthy honeymoon in Antigua.
